MARTIN, MI -- U.S. 131 -

MARTIN, MI -- U.S. 131 Motorsports Park has introduced a new logo in honor of its 50th anniversary season, and the phrase, ‘Still Making Memories!’ is embedded into its design.
But the memory created during last weekend’s season-opening races is one that we would all love to forget.

Bruce Litton is among the Top Fuel stars scheduled to race in this weekend's Thunder Nationals at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park.

Martin officials are busy preparing for its first big special event of the season since it is hosting the 29th annual Thunder Nationals Friday and Saturday. This was supposed to be a week of positive reflection on decades of memories, as well as anticipation of one of the season’s most exciting weekends. This is the only time we will get to see 320 mph Top Fuel cars race in the state this season.

But Dan Cerio of Manlius, N.Y., was killed in an Aeroquip Outlaw Sled race during eliminations last Saturday night, making him the second drag-racing related fatality in the track’s history and the first since Jay Gearhart of Kalamazoo was killed in May 1986.

Most of the racing community across the West Michigan area probably never heard of Cerio, 22, before last weekend. But what happened to him still breaks our hearts. It sounds like he was a great kid with plenty of potential.

“I really hate to see that happen. I hate to see anyone get hurt, and I pray for the family,” said Bruce Litton of Indianapolis, who will be one of four Top Fuel stars racing down the Martin quarter-mile this weekend. “It’s a bad situation for everyone.

“This is a dangerous sport. Any time you race anything fast, you can get hurt doing it. It can happen at any track at any time.”
Well said, Litton. It really is bad for everyone involved in racing when tragedy strikes, and it doesn’t matter if the driver is Dan Cerio or Dan Wheldon. Drivers are ripped by outsiders for participating in such a sport, and so are the fans for supporting them and the track promoters for hosting the races.

I think motorsports gets a bad knock. I have covered deaths in other sports, too, but they don't get the backlash like racing does. Let's investigate what went wrong and make the necessary safety changes. But please, no knee-jerk reactions.

What helps me deal with racing's downside is to reflect on all the reasons why I enjoy this sport so much. That’s easy to do when it comes Martin Dragway. There are 50 years of fond memories.

There was that night back in the late 1980s when I knocked on Don ‘The Snake’ Prudhomme’s hauler. He told me to come on in, and he gave me all the time I needed.
Here’s what topped that, though. I was walking through the pits with my two children during a March test-and-tune, and racer Keith Shafer of Kalamazoo asked them if they wanted to sit in his dragster. That alone made their spring break.

Remember how packed those stands were back on those cold spring evenings over 20 years ago when the United Drag Racing Association would make its annual visit? Those shows ran until 2 a.m. Sunday, and yet, no one would leave.

Martin's Popular Hot Rodding meet days are long gone. But I really enjoy the American Drag Racing League's visit each summer. What I'm really digging these days are the Prostalgia Funny Cars, which will return with the IHRA Nitro Jam in August.

There is a Martin U.S. 131 Dragway Facebook page, and fans are posting old racing photographs all the time. Please keep those photos coming, guys. I check them out every day.
And who will forget Litton’s run of 328.54 mph during the 2007 International Hot Rod Association’s Northern Nationals? No driver has ever gone faster in Martin’s 50-year history.
“We were in the right lane, and it was a weekend where you had a lot of top cars in the NHRA there, so everyone was on their game,” Litton said. “We hit a good stroke, and I could tell it was on a good run. When the car doesn’t want to stop, you know it’s pretty fast.”

I’m ready to get back to racing. Pro qualifying is 7 p.m. Friday, followed by eliminations at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. Saturday.
The Top Fuel field will include Bobby Lagana Jr. and Chris Karamesines. Burn Box Bob Kirsh is coming out of retirement to work the event. There will be Nostalgia Front Engine Top Fuel cars and the Midwest Super Stock Mafia.

It’s time to start making some more memories – memories that we will want to keep.

There will be, and is work being done to the mobile theme right now and over the next few months.

Just expanding support and features for the most part.

Right now it seems tablets are the most effected (negatively) by the last update.
